[B16] ‘Soul Contamination’

Released on: Stay Beautiful (Single #4) Columbia Records, 29 July 1991
Track: 3
Peak UK Chart Position:  #40
Band Ranking: #22

Undoubtedly the weakest of the three songs on the Stay Beautiful single, ‘Soul Contamination’ at least has an excellent title which implies big, clever themes; unfortunately it is instead seriously compromised by some almost hilariously over-thought and sluggish lyrics. A few phrases are actually interesting and memorable – especially “poverty expressed in your heart” – but the overall effect is little better than confusion.

Although the song is at heart the kind of straightforward rocker the band must have thought necessary to temper the presence of ‘R.P. McMurphy’, there are redeeming features in the instrumental work, especially in the clever guitar interplay throughout. There are also, happily, live drums.

Choice Lyric (Full Lyrics)
