[T172] ‘Fragments’

Released on: Lifeblood (Album #7), Sony Records, 1 November 2004
Track: 11

Appearing close to the end of Lifeblood, ‘Fragments’ appears to represent something of a summation of two themes that recur throughout the album: the exorcising of old ghosts and the search for peace and solitude. Fittingly, it adopts a calm, serene and dignified atmosphere which again fits Wire’s description of the LP as “elegiac pop”.

The instrumental track is quite meticulous is full of small, attractive electronic details but the most appealing parts of the song are lyrical (the excellent line “two minutes silence in a century of screams”) and vocal (Bradfield’s melismatic extension of the final word of the chorus).
