[B180] ‘Failure Bound’

Released on: Empty Souls (Single #32), Epic Records, 10 January 2005
Peak UK Chart Position: #2

While the relative novelty of [B179] ‘Dying Breeds’ was a positive one, the outright oddness of its counterpart ‘Failure Bound’ does the track few favours. Not so much a song as a spoken word piece, this admittedly unique recording sees Wire talk over the music of yet another Lifeblood B-side – [B177] ‘No Jubilees’ – played backwards.

A segment of the lyrics, beginning “I listen to money singing”, is not Wire’s work but rather the final stanza of ‘Money’, a poem by English writer Philip Larkin (1922 – 1985).

Choice “Lyric” (Full “Lyrics”)
“It is intensely sad”
